In an escape from the winter cold, a group of people are on a trek through a remote desert. The weather is hot over there, so needless to say, most of the group had brought along plenty of water to last the day.
However, Joel had come underprepared with nothing to drink. Determined not to dehydrate, after a while he starts to ask around. Malcolm and Denise both offered to share their water with thirsty Joel. Malcolm had three litres, and Denise had five litres. The three ended up sharing the lot equally between them as they went about the long walk.
Towards the end of the day, Joel decides it’s time to reward Malcolm and Denise for their generosity. So he gets out eight pound coins, intending to divide them between the two friends in proportion to their contributions. However, a bit of a quarrel breaks out as the three disagree on how much each should receive.
What is the fairest way of dividing up the cash?
What number goes at the top of the tree?
Fill the grid with the numbers from 1 to 9, such that each number appears exactly once in each row, each column and each of the nine 3×3 blocks.
