For each number, consider a triangle with that number at the top and the base on the bottom row. This number is the mean of the two numbers at the lower corners of the triangle. For example, the 11 near the middle is the mean of the 18 and 4 at the bottom.
So the number at the top is 17, the mean of the two numbers at the lower corners of the tree.
